
Dr. Joseph Kobla Wemakor is a prominent Ghanaian human rights advocate, peace ambassador, journalist, and international development communicator, widely recognized for his bold and sustained contributions to human rights protection, child protection, women’s rights, gender equality, and the defense of marginalized and vulnerable populations. He is the Founder and Executive Director of Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG), a dynamic frontline civil society organization dedicated to advancing human dignity, social justice, and accountability, with a strong focus on women, children, youth, rural communities, and other underserved groups. For over a decade, Dr. Wemakor has led high-impact advocacy on child protection and child labour, women’s rights, gender justice, land and environmental rights, climate justice, and sustainable livelihoods. His work promotes equitable land access, environmental stewardship, and responsible agribusiness as pathways to poverty reduction, community resilience, and inclusive development. Through HRRG, he has empowered women, children, farmers, landowners, youth entrepreneurs, and marginalized communities to understand and claim their rights, engage decision-makers, and participate meaningfully in governance processes. He has spearheaded national and grassroots campaigns on land dispossession, gender-based discrimination, child exploitation in farming, climate adaptation, and ethical development, working closely with government institutions, traditional authorities, civil society organizations, farmer groups, women’s networks, and youth movements. Dr. Wemakor plays a strategic role in Ghana’s civil society and sustainable development ecosystem. He is a Steering Committee Member of the Ghana Civil Society Organizations Platform on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Convener of its Youth Sub-Platform, representing over 500 CSOs nationwide. He also serves on the Advocacy Technical Committee for Ghana’s draft Non-Profit Organization (NPO) Bill, contributing to reforms that protect civic space and strengthen civil society governance. In recognition of his leadership in youth-centered advocacy, Dr. Wemakor was invited to speak on “Youth Engagement in Advancing Human Rights and the SDGs” at the National Civil Society Conference on the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations, held in commemoration of the 2025 International Human Rights Day. The conference was organized by the Coalition of NGOs Associated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications (DGC) in Ghana. A respected thought leader and international speaker, Dr. Wemakor has represented Ghana at major continental and global forums, including the United Nations High-Level Political Forum, (US.) Pan-African Human Rights and Social Justice Conference, (Kenya) International Seminar on Enhancing Human Rights Activities in North Korea (July 2025,), Pan-African Conference on National Security and Human Rights (August 2025, Nairobi), the Launch of Ghana’s Civic Space Outlook Documentary (August 2024), South Korea COVID-19 Human Rights Forums, and the High-Level Africa Civil Society AML/CFT Conference 2025 in Gaborone, Botswana, where he received certification. In further recognition of his growing influence in global human rights and digital rights advocacy, Dr. Wemakor was selected by Access Now, a globally renowned international organization dedicated to defending and advancing digital rights, to convene and facilitate a major high-level dialogue session at the RightsCon 2026 Summit in Lusaka, Zambia. The session, themed “Silenced Twice: Press Freedom and Disability Voices Under Threat in Africa,” was designed to bring together journalists, policymakers, disability rights advocates, civil society leaders, and human rights experts from across the world to examine the intersection of shrinking civic space, media freedom, and the exclusion of persons with disabilities. Through this appointment, Dr. Wemakor was recognized for his leadership in promoting inclusive media spaces, freedom of expression, and the protection of marginalized voices across Africa. He served as Special Guest of Honor and Speaker at the Farmers Care Program held on November 7, 2025, in Yilo Krobo, Somanya, delivering a presentation on “Understanding Land Rights and Laws as a Farmer.” The program was organized by Eminence Lead International with support from the Agricultural Development Bank and Ghana COCOBOD. Dr. Wemakor was also a Panel Speaker at the 3rd West Africa Civil Society Week (WACS Week 2025), held from 19–20 November 2025 in Accra, contributing to discussions on “Peace, Security and Justice Imperatives.” The event was organized by the Civic Space Resource Hub in partnership with the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) and Spaces for Change (S4C), with support from the Ford Foundation. His work has earned significant national and international recognition. He is a recipient of the prestigious 5th UN Global Entreps Award, becoming the only Ghanaian awardee from West Africa, the Africa Peace Advocate Award (2023), and was a Finalist for the African Human Rights Defenders Shield Award (2023). He placed fourth in the Africans Rising Activism Award 2020 (Movement of the Year Category), received the Peace, Security and Education Award of the Year 2021 at the Africa Early Childhood Education Awards, and was recognized by the I Believe Global Women’s Empowerment Foundation (IBGWE) for advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment. In journalism, he was named Most Influential Student Media Personnel (2016) by the Ghana Institute of Journalism, won the National Migration Media Award (2018), and received recognition during the GIJ 60th Anniversary Media Contest for his outstanding reporting on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Internationally, he was featured in the October 2020 edition of International Business Woman Magazine (Ukraine), accredited by the European Parliament, for his post-lockdown advocacy for women’s rights. He also contributed to the World Bank’s Second Edition of the Equality of Opportunity for Sexual and Gender Minorities (EQOSOGI) Report. In November 2024, Dr. Wemakor was officially awarded the Global Doctoral Humanitarian and Ministerial Excellence Award by the Board of Regents of the International Kingdom University in Florida, USA, in recognition of his lifelong commitment to social work, humanitarian service, and community development. He is a graduate of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, a Fellow of the Fortifying the Truth Cohort (WITNESS), and an alumnus of the Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa Financial Journalism Program.
