She called out

To the vast night sky

Looked up in wonder

At billions of sparkling eyes

Staring back at her

A great leap

Hopping onto a stone

She outstretched her fingers

An attempt to clasp a star

Into her gentle fist

Autumn’s chill

Rippled down her spine

And wind shook through the trees

Awakening the world around her

A dance of crunching leaves

Her woven sweater

Kept her warmth close

Her heartbeat

Pounding like a drum

Dancing shadows all around

Enough to shake her bones

Questions swirled in her mind

As she looked to the stars

She could stay here

Forever she thought

And wait for the stars to talk

The sky gazed back and twinkled

As if holding close a secret

Of history and mysteries

Of past, present and future

One star was especially bright

Took her attention for a while

What if she were once a star

The thought made her smile

An owl sounded above

Glorious wings expanded

Taking flight towards the stars

And landing on the the moon

Soon a veil of clouds

Swallowed the moon’s light

And a yawn reminded her

It’s time to move along

The trail lit up with fireflies

Soft grasses met her feet

And before she left

She looked up to find

Billions of eyes twinkling

Telling her goodnight
