"It's not what you know, it's who you know."
For years, this phrase has annoyed people more than a slow internet connection during an online interview.
Many graduates hear it and think:
"So you're telling me I spent four years studying, writing assignments at 2 AM, surviving exams, and fighting for a degree… just to be told I needed someone's phone number?"
It sounds unfair.
But here is the uncomfortable truth:
Your degree can open a few doors.
Your skills can help you walk through them.
But your network can introduce you to doors you didn't even know existed.
Because sometimes the opportunity you are desperately searching for is not hidden in a job portal. It is sitting in someone's WhatsApp contacts, waiting for someone to say:
"Hey, I know someone who would be perfect for this."
Every year, thousands of graduates enter the job market armed with degrees, certificates, impressive GPAs, and enough PDF files on their laptops to crash a small computer.
They update their CVs every week.
They apply for hundreds of jobs.
They write cover letters so emotional they could make a movie director cry.
"Dear Hiring Manager, I have always dreamed of joining your organization..."
Meanwhile, the hiring manager is receiving 500 similar applications and wondering:
"Who are these people? And why does everyone suddenly have 'excellent communication skills'?"
Months pass.
No interviews.
No callbacks.
No opportunities.
Then they start asking painful questions:
"Am I not talented enough?"
"Why are others moving ahead while I am stuck?"
"Did I spend all those years studying for nothing?"
But sometimes the problem isn't your intelligence.
It isn't your degree.
It isn't even your ability.
The problem is that too few people know you exist.
And unfortunately, the world cannot reward someone it has never discovered.
The world has changed.
Opportunities no longer only appear on company websites wearing a formal suit and waiting for you to click "Apply."
They appear in conversations.
At conferences.
During volunteering activities.
Inside professional communities.
Through LinkedIn messages.
During random conversations where someone says:
"Actually, my company is looking for someone with your skills."
The funny thing is, many young professionals spend hours making their CV look like a masterpiece but avoid networking events like they are avoiding a surprise exam.
They think:
"What will I say? I am just a student."
"I don't have enough experience."
"Why would an important person want to talk to me?"
Meanwhile, someone else with the same qualifications is getting opportunities because they had a 10-minute conversation three months ago.
They were not necessarily smarter.
They were not necessarily more qualified.
They were simply known.
And humans naturally trust people they know.
Ignoring networking is like owning the world's best phone but keeping it on airplane mode forever.
The technology is there.
The potential is there.
But nobody can reach you.
When you don't build relationships, you miss:
Mentors who could save you years of mistakes.
Professionals who could guide your career.
Partners who could help you build something bigger.
Opportunities that never become public.
Sometimes people say:
"There are no opportunities out there."
But the truth is:
Sometimes the opportunities exist.
You are just not connected to the places where they live.
Waiting until you desperately need a job to start networking is like starting to learn swimming after falling into the ocean.
Possible?
Yes.
Comfortable?
Absolutely not.
The good news?
Networking is not a magical superpower given only to extroverts who can walk into a room and talk to 50 strangers without sweating.
You don't need to become the person who enters a conference and collects business cards like they are collecting Pokémon cards.
"I must collect them all!"
Networking is simply building relationships.
Start small:
- Talk to people whose work interests you.
- Attend workshops, conferences, and community events.
- Join professional groups.
-Volunteer on projects.
-Comment thoughtfully on people's work online.
-Share knowledge and help others.
Most importantly:
Don't approach people thinking:
"What can this person give me?"
Approach them thinking:
"How can we create value for each other?"
People remember those who listen.
People remember those who help.
People remember those who show up.
A degree tells people you completed a program.
Skills show people what you can do.
But relationships often determine whether someone gives you the chance to prove yourself.
Your dream job might not come from a perfect application.
It might come from a conversation.
A recommendation.
A person who remembers you.
So yes, keep studying.
Keep improving your skills.
Keep building your expertise.
But don't build a powerful engine and forget to build the road that takes you somewhere.
Because sometimes, the biggest opportunity in your life is just one conversation away.
And that conversation starts with:
"Hi, my name is..." 😄
